Day 20
Chanute, KS to Eureka, KS
66 miles

Jake did real well today considering this is the first time we have covered more than 60 miles two days in a row. We had mostly side and head winds today, although a few miles were covered with a tailwind.

It was a strenuous day for Jake and me because the stretches are longer and we needed to ride in a very disciplined manner, with one of us shielding the other from the wind.

The treed landscape of Kentucky and Missouri has given way to large vistas and mostly treeless, high prairies. The people here tell us that there prairie grass is the richest in the US and that beef cattle are brought here to be fattened up.

Everywhere is green prairie grass. We have entered into the high prairie called the Flint Hills of Kansas.

My wonderful 95-year-old father has been a great help to us since earlier in the week. He drives ahead – up to 70 miles – to check out the best or only place to get a snack, a lunch, and where to sleep for the night.

Today, Jake didn’t eat much breakfast. You don’t get much energy from cold cereal. The first chance of buying any food was at the 40 mile mark today. So at about 37 miles, Dad shows up with a half-sandwich and some juice for each of us. It was greatly appreciated.
